J-J-Journal

I read On Overcoming Modernism by Lorraine Wild
She wrote about the change that has occured since the 50's and tells how modernity had changed graphic design forever. She talks about many characteristics and aspects of modernity, one good point she made was how anyone with a word processing program can be a graphic designer. The digital age brought about a change in design with new typefaces and a new way of doing things that is different from the hands on things that were done in design past.
More to come...

I also read RETHINKING MODERNISM, REVISING FUNCTIONALISM by Katherine McCoy
McCoy wrote about how she was trained by the best in Swiss design. The use of the grid and Helvetica was routine. Soon, she wanted something more expressive: Post Modernism or New Wave.

"
Then in the mid 1980s at Cranbrook we found a new interest in verbal language in graphic design, as well as fine art. Text can be animated with voices and images can be read, as well as seen, with an emphasis on audience interpretation and participation in the construction of meaning."

And finally I read, Long live Modernism.
The last few paragraphs interested me the most. He praised modernism, and said that it was good for our culture and the environment, and all the new designers and architects that emerged from the movement created it. He said post modernism helped solve some of the issues still stemming from modernism, but the movement soon dies, but the effects of modernism are still being seen today.
