After reading the article, I realized that I have never really noticed Futura. I tok a look at my font sheet and I take a good hard study of it. Personally I don't really like it. It does have some nice characteristics though, nice pointed apex's, a one story round a, questionable question mark. What I really don't care for is the thinness of the r ans b compared to the Q and G, but that is what make it even more unique.
But I understand the article, why stick with one font and not explore? I myself have a run to typeface (Univers) but I try others, (even though I always think Univers looks best) and try completely avoiding my run to font. And on top of that knowing a bit of history helps a lot, the who what and why can only help in a typeface selection dilemma.
Now a futura replacement? I like Akzidnz Grotesk. It has the round O and Q, the straight legged R. You'll miss the single story a and the pointed Apex's but this font has a good attitude.
I read Ten Things That Need to be Redesigned. It featured things that just look bad to things that need to be more functional. Some examples are: Lottery tickets, The hearse, Monopoly Money, politial lawn signs, and New Jersey.
